Properties
Iridium is less common than gold or platinum. In nature, it occurs elementally in the form of small grains or in the accompaniment of platinum. With osmium, it forms two naturally occurring minerals.
Applications
Iridium is often included in alloys that give it hardness and/or brittleness. Platinum-iridium alloys are used in precision measurements, in medicine and mechanical engineering.
